What Is an Infrared Thermometer?

An infrared thermometer is a non-contact temperature measurement instrument that detects the infrared energy emitted by a surface and converts it into a temperature reading. Unlike contact probes, IR thermometers measure instantly from a distance — making them ideal for moving targets, hazardous environments, and rapid scanning applications.

Every object above absolute zero emits infrared radiation. The amount emitted depends on the object's temperature and its emissivity — the efficiency with which a surface emits that energy. Understanding these two factors is the foundation of accurate infrared measurement.
